Packing Up Camp by Kami Mabry

My aunts my best friend

We talked every week

We are miles apart, but that never mattered

Are calls were always happy and fun

Till one day she called

And asked for my mom…

They talked for a while

And I waited for them to get done

come to find out my aunt, my best friend and my role model

Had devastating news to tell me
And she didn’t know how to say it

I put the phone up to my ear and I hear

“Pookie?” “I love you with all my heart.”

She says that she’s sick, very sick

“What do you mean?”

She tells me she has cancer

And she has short time left.

I sat in silence and disbelief

Thanksgiving is a time for thanks and

Family and that is how we spent it

Only difference was we were spending it with aunt barb

And it was our last thanksgiving as we all knew

We knew our time with her was coming

We just didn’t know when.

Hospice works told us she was definitely near the end

She told my mom and her sisters to let her know

It was okay to go

She loved camping very much

So the sister told her it was time to pack up camp and head on in.

Early in the morning we woke up to finding out she packed up camp and is with our family in heaven once again.
